Music History | Chapter 1 | From the Beginning | Prehistoric Music to Ancient Music

Target students:  Lower-grade - Grade 4,5,6
National Core Art Standards:
-MU:Pr4.1.2 - Demonstrate and explain personal interest in, knowledge about, and purpose of varied musical selections.

Essential Questions:
-Are you aware of and can embrace various perspectives in the world?
-Can you explain in your own words the characteristics, background, and puporse of the music we listen to?

Did you guys listen to any music this morning?  Last night?  What kind of music did you listen to?

You say you didn't hear any music? Then how about on TV? How about on youtube?  How about on your computer game?  When you walk into the restaurant? Shopping mall? Music is a big part of us and all around us nowadays, that we don't even think much about it when we hear one. We take it for granted.

Imagine the time period when there was no radio, no computer, no smartphone, no TV.  People could go weeks and months without hearing any music.
People had a very rare chance of hearing great music played by professional musicians until the voice recorder called phonograph was invented by Edison in the year 1877.

Whatever music you are into, rap, hip-hop, k-pop, Disney, classical, musical, whatever it may be, the musical techniques that they rely upon did not happen overnight.

Music can make us whip or make us dance.  It has reflected the time it was written.

In our first unit, let us take a closer look at how it all began.
